One of my university projects involved traveling to Malaysia to document the palm oil trade and its impacts on education, religion, healthcare, and rural communities. While the negative environmental effects of the palm oil industry are well-known, what intrigued me most were the numerous opportunities that have emerged from its economic growth. These include significant infrastructure improvements such as water, electricity, and wifi in rural areas, the establishment of health clinics offering emergency services, increased funding for schools, and a notable reduction in poverty levels, to name a few. It's often overlooked in the Western media, which tends to focus solely on the industry's negative aspects.
